DreamHack Atlanta to host collegiate esports matches

DREAMHACK ATLANTA TO HOST COLLEGIATE ESPORTS MATCHES

ATLANTA — DreamHack is partnering with The American Video Game League (AVGL) and Twitch Student to launch college esports grudge matches at DreamHack Atlanta. The partnership is the first of its kind to feature collegiate esports — front and center — at a major gaming event.

“DreamHack Atlanta will feature players from major universities battling for supremacy on the main stage,” said DreamHack Chief Executive Officer Marcus Lindmark. “Video games as a college sport was unthinkable just a few years ago. But since its inception, collegiate esports has exploded in growth. We’re excited to be partnering with Twitch Student Student and AVGL to showcase America’s best in collegiate esports athletes.”

According to a report published in the May 31, 2017 issue of “The Next Level,” an estimated 600+ students from 40 universities will represent their schools, next year, in competitive League of Legends, Overwatch and other video game tournaments. Varsity-level esports athletes are expected to receive a collective $4.1 million in scholarship tuition packages.
